Isn’t it obvious?

obvious signs

Obvious and it’s related form obviously are two words that are used on high rotation in my vocabulary. Not a day goes by that one or both of these words aren't uttered. By definition, obvious an adjective, is something that is easily seen, recognized or understood, lacking in subtlety. Obviously, an adverb is without subtlety.

I do wonder why it is necessary to have signs that say “the road/path/park/swimming pool (insert anything in a public place built for use by the public) is here to share’. Do we really need a sign to remind us of this? Isn’t it obvious that there are other human beings on the planet who would like to use the same road/path/park/swimming pool?

Other things that should be obvious:

  • Poison will kill you if you drink or eat it.
  • If you see a sign that reads ‘Danger’ it means whatever the danger is, it is can hurt you.
  • Do not place non food items in the microwave to heat/cook
  • If you break the law speeding, drunk driving etc you will be punished because you have broken the law, it’s not because people, the government or aliens are out to get you.
  • A car gets very very hot in the summer, particularly when the windows are up and the air conditioning is off.
  • There’s in no such thing as ‘it’ll only take a couple of minutes’, it always takes longer.
  • If you transfer cooked food from a pot on the stove to a bowl or plate and then into your mouth straight away, it will be extremely hot and may cause burns.

For fear of sounding like a crazy ranting person (again) I will end this blog by saying, common sense and common courtesy go a long way and omit the need for obvious signs. If people guilty of being self centered stopped being so, the world would be a much peaceful place, obviously.

Textiles and Design

I wasn't the best at sewing, as a teen in Textiles and Design classes and I have shown only marginal improvement, as an adult behind a sewing machine. I'm pretty good at sewing in a straight line once I place the right pressure on the foot pedal and have untangled the bobbin thread from the rest of the machine. In saying that, once the frustration and tears pass, I do enjoy working towards making something and holding up the finished item with great pride. I also enjoy finding and admiring textiles, yarns, weaves and knits.

These are some of my favourite textiles and designs of products that are available in-store, online.

Sometimes my english not so good

Posted on February 23, 2013 by Hostile Bacon | 0 Comments

I love to read and collect words, individually and collectively. I have a number of notebooks that I have filled with words I've collected over the years. These are words that may sound poetic, be meaningful, sound funny when spoken out loud or, I simply find interesting. Yet there are times when my english is not so good. There are a number of factors that affect my grasp of the language at times, the biggest culprit being heterophones. (No it’s not a girl phone that likes a boy phone. It’s got nothing to do with phones, boys or girls as the word may suggest).

Heterophones are words with the same spelling, different sounds and different meanings. Some examples include:

Bass - a kind of fish or low pitch sound
Close - to shut something or to describe something/someone that is nearby
Content - being satisfied or information
Dove - a pretty white bird or past tense of dive
Moped - a small motorcycle
or the past tense of mope
Overall - an item of clothing
or collective
Present - a gift or the current moment
Record- to make note or something one would play on a record player
Sake - a rice wine or benefit
Wind - to tighten a spring
or movement of air
Tear - to separate or what we produce when upset, laughing too hard or frustrated because we have no idea what the other person is saying!

If I had a *moped I would jump on it, wearing my *overall and ride into the *wind. (See how easy it is to misinterpret something and why my english may not be so good sometimes)

I do admire people who can speak and understand multiple languages, it’s a wonderful skill and truth be told, very fancy.

What to do for 40?

Posted on February 16, 2013 by Hostile Bacon | 0 Comments

40th birthday ideas February is a big birthday month in my family. From the 5th -15th, my mum, brother, dad ,sister in law, an aunt, a cousin, and I all celebrate our birthdays. This year I turned 39 and celebrated quietly over dinner with Mr B and friends. It was quite this year because next year I want it to be BIG. My mind has already started ticking about what to do for my 40th and have so far come up with celebrating in New York, celebrating in New York and celebrating in New York. As you can see I’m stuck. Because of this I would like to enlist your help.I am open to ideas and invite you to help me plan my 40th.

For now, Happy Birthday to my family and everyone else celebrating their birthday this month.
